Former national U-23 and Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia has been asked to take charge of the country’s Olympic team, MTNFootball.com can exclusively reveal.

Siasia was fired in October 2011 after he failed to qualify Nigeria to the 2012 Africa cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

He has since this dismissal not worked even though he has been linked with various coaching jobs, from India to Kenya.

“We have contacted Siasia for the vacant U-23 job but he is yet to get back to us,” a top NFF official stated.

“He was on holidays in the US but we hear he is back so we will be expecting his response because we want to start early so as to avoid the pain of 2011.”

Siasia led Nigeria to the final of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, where they lost by the odd goal to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina.

Austin Eguavoen resigned his post as coach of the Nigeria U23s after he failed to qualify the team for the All Africa Games and the London 2012 Olympics.

To most Nigerians and other global citizens interested in Nigeria’s affairs, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) which was established in 1977, is the government owned public broadcaster of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a mandate to inform, educate and entertain. But very little is known about the corporate social responsibility roles that NTA plays for the country.

NTA has over the years extended her services to all corners of the world with the sole aim of marketing the investment potentials of Nigeria. In 2010, the NTA under the management of its immediate past Director General Alhaji Usman Magawata entered into a bilateral agreement with Suncast Communications, a United States – based communication operator to commence the operation of five television channels in the United States of America. The five channels launched in America by the NTA in 2010 at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington D.C. are NTA News 24; NTA 2 Lagos, NTA Sports; NTA Entertainment and NTA Knowledge channels just as the report has it that these channels would be managed by Suncast a Communications.

The tradition of playing the role of a media ambassador for the purpose of attracting foreign direct investments to Nigeria has remained consistently alive with the current management of the NTA headed by the acting Director General Alhaji Musa Mayaki who has taken corporate responsibility a nudge further following the well established precedents.

Specifically, one of the essential corporate social responsibility roles taken up by the NTA and competently implemented over time is the hosting of an international investment forum in the United Kingdom, whereby key stakeholders from the different federating units of Nigeria are allowed the platform to market the investments potentials of their parts of the country with the national goal of attracting genuine foreign direct investors into the country.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Harvard and MIT- trained economist recently published a book titled “Reforming The Unreformable” whereby she highlighted the need for agencies of government to key into the transformation and reform agenda of the federal government to create jobs and also to improve the investment climate.

But what the NTA has achieved by organizing the second business/investment forum and exhibition in London between February 21st to 23rd 2013 is to enlighten the investment community that Nigeria has indeed become friendly for them to move in their capital and invest in the nation’s economy.

The second gain of the business/investment forum is that the national broadcaster has made radical and far- reaching effort to attract a number of investors who in turn will create jobs for the Nigerian youth.

Aptly titled “Exposing Nigeria’s Rich Investment Potentials To The World”, the forum which took place in central London at the Cavendish conference center, witnessed presentations by high profile state government officials, representatives of ministers of Information, Trade and Commerce and the Acting Director General of the NTA Alhaji Musa Mayaki among other distinguished Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom. At the Business Investment Forum And Exhibition, the Kwara, Zamfara and Niger State governments reportedly made representations on the rich investment potential of their states.

Speaking on behalf of the state governments, their representatives used the platform to campaign for foreign direct investments to their states promising several incentives to the genuine foreign investors.

Vice Chairman of the Business Council for Africa, Clive Carpenter to the entire project also paid glowing tributes to Nigeria during a paper presentation on “Nigeria Business Ventures: Challenges and Prospects” just as he challenged genuine investors to do business with Nigeria.

NTA’s Acting Director, Musa Mayaki, who competently moderated the sessions asked prospective investors to take advantage of the current drive by the federal government to come over to Nigeria.

“Doing business in Nigeria is safe due to the enabling environment provided by the government, so invest your capital in the various sectors of the economy and you will be glad you did” just like the South African telecommunication giant, MTN is”, he said.

A unique survey conducted on thousands of women working in agricultural processing plants from several countries in Africa and India, found that the work offered them opportunities that exceeded financial benefits. Olam International, the agricultural supply chain and food ingredients company, found that women working in its cashew processing plants, said the work they were doing gave them confidence, independence and choices that they would normally not experience.

Nearly six-thousand women were surveyed from Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Nigeria and Tanzania.

“We asked the women in our cashew processing plant, over and above their wage, what was the single most important factor to them in their employment, and 36% of those women identified that working gives them independence and choices,” explained Briony Mathieson, head of corporate sustainability communications for Olam International. She added that at a close second, 33% of the women, said the work also gave them status and confidence.

Mathieson explained that the cashew supply chain requires intensive labor for it to be done well. The outer skin of the cashew nut must be peeled without breaking the nut. She said the nut is worth more when it is peeled whole, and the women working in these plants are very skilled in doing this.

In addition to performing unskilled labor, Mathieson pointed out that the women who work in agricultural processing do have opportunities to advance to more skilled positions.

“They are very good managers and they then gain more status within their communities, and obviously we offer them maternity rights and other benefits over and above the wage that they have as they would in any developing country,” said Mathieson.

The survey also found that women are more responsive to the opportunities that training gives them in many cases, than men.

“So women on the shop floor are given the opportunity to progress if they show an interest in doing that. I should point out that many women who do this unskilled work for us are in fact using this as a supplementary income to the fact that they’re also running a family farm. So generally, we build our factories close to where the cashews are actually grown so we could create a local economy,” explained Mathieson.

She said another benefit of working at the cashew processing plants is that 19% of the women found they receive useful information to take back to their families.

Prof. Peter OnwualuThe Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) says its cluster project on plantain flour, oil palm, fish drying will provide some 500 jobs for Bayelsa indigenes.

The Director-General of the council, Prof. Peter Onwualu, said in Abuja that all was set for the take-off of the project. He recalled that the council had completed a baseline study on raw materials available in each ward in the country in 2012.

According to him, the council was able to complete the baseline study on the potential and existing clusters in about 9,000 wards across the country.

“In Bayelsa, we are working on plantain flour, oil palm, fish drying; and contract for the machines needed to have been awarded since last year and are now being fabricated. We believe that this will create over 500 jobs, and the number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state are up to 30,” he said, adding that results from research institutes would also be used by the SMEs.

Onwualu said that the council has commissioned a cluster project on cassava production in Umuahia, Abia, and a number of projects on oil palm cluster in Anambra.

“We were able to cover four locations in Anambra. We deployed small-scale machines for processing palm fruit to palm oil and palm kernel; this is part of the cluster formation we are doing to build capacity,” he said. He added that the council would organise a training programme on clusters for each state in the country.

“Our target is to have at least one training in each state in Nigeria depending on the available raw materials in that state. We were able to cover 28 states for the training; each of them focused on different raw materials,” he said.

The Director-General listed some of the focused raw materials to include carline, cassava, granite, tomatoes processing, and stone cutting. Onwualu said out that the council has trained more than 1,000 women on improved methods of processing tomatoes and fruits in Taraba.

Microwork job creation initiative in Nigeria

FG launches microwork job creation initiative – The Ministry of Communications Technology will today launch a job creation scheme ‘Microwork for Job Creation-Naijacloud’ that seeks to reduce unemployment and create wealth for youths of Nigeria.

The Ministry with support from the STEP-B project, under the Ministry of Education is launching ‘Microwork for Jobs Creation in Nigeria’ to address the issues of employability and job creation using information technology.

The primary objective of the project is to create awareness about the work opportunities in the Microwork and ELancing space as well as create job opportunities for youths in Nigeria in order to reduce the unemployment rate.

The initiative also aims to reduce the country’s brain drain, create business opportunities for potential Nigerian Microwork and ELancing Companies, wealth creation opportunities for the young and showcase opportunities for Nigerian Businesses to work more efficiently and have a broader Nigerian workers database.

Special Assistant on media to the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Efem Nkanga, who dropped the hint, said “the ministry is tapping into the Microwork opportunity, in line with its mandate to create jobs by taking advantage of fast-growing ICTs in Nigeria in order to reduce youth unemployment, which currently is high at 60 per cent level for youth.”

‘Microwork for Job Creation in Nigeria’ initiative includes two aspects of Paid Crowd-sourcing technology: Microwork and e-Lancing. Paid crowd-sourcing is an expanding segment within the new virtual economy with significant job creation potential for skilled (e-Lancing) and semi-skilled workers (Microwork). The estimated global size of the microwork market is $450 million to $900 million annually.

The Microwork for job creation naijacloud is an initiative targeted at unemployed Nigerians using the technology platform. Unemployed youth with access to phone and internet looking for work are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity.

To drive the initiative, a free workshop provided by internationally acclaimed companies (Crowdflower, Elance, ODesk, Mobileworks and Samasource) will be held simultaneously at the -Digital Bridge Institute, Oshodi Lagos on March 18 and 19 and Cham’s City, Abuja on March 18.

The unique selling point of the initiative, according to Nkanga, would be male and female participants with basic computer skills, without necessarily having a university degree.

Interestingly, global expansion is part of my clients overall strategy and they will continue to look for opportunities to expand their operations internationally over the coming years. This is exciting times to work for my client with great salary and company benefits and the option of either permanent work or daily rate contract work.

The Ministry of Communications Technology will today launch a job creation scheme ‘Microwork for Job Creation-Naijacloud’ that seeks to reduce unemployment and create wealth for youths of Nigeria.

Google’s Motorola Mobility unit is to shed another 1,200 jobs or 10 percent of its workforce as the smartphone maker tries to return to profitability, Google said on Friday.

The lay-offs come on top of the 4,000 jobs cut at Motorola Mobility in August as Google seeks to make more smartphones and fewer simple handsets.

“These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer,” spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said in an email to Reuters.

“It’s obviously very hard for the employees concerned, and we are committed to helping them through this difficult transition,” she added.

The Wall Street Journal reported the lay-offs earlier on Friday, citing a company email.

The email about the job cuts, which will affect workers in the United States, China and India, said, “our costs are too high, we’re operating in markets where we’re not competitive and we’re losing money,” according to the Journal.

Google bought the money-losing cellphone maker for $12.5bn last year, its largest acquisition ever, aiming to use Motorola Mobility’s armory of patents to fend off legal attacks on its Android mobile platform and expand beyond its software business.

But the acquisition raised concerns on Wall Street that Google was entering a business with much lower profit margins.
